India slams Pakistan at UNHRC
Established in 1838, The Times of India is the world’s oldest English-language daily newspaper. Additionally, it serves as a digital news publication that provides up-to-the-minute coverage of national and international issues and events.
On Thursday at the UNHRC, India charged that Pakistan has served as a “safe haven” for terrorists. Additionally, Islamabad has an established record of financing cross-border terrorism.
Seema Pujani, India’s envoy at the Council, lamented Pakistan’s failure to meet global demands for dismantling its terrorist infrastructure. She demanded that Pakistan cease extrajudicial killings, rape, murder, abduction and forced conversion to Islam as well as attacks on places of worship for Hazaras, Shias, Ahmadiyyas, Hindus, Sikhs and Christians alike.
India also strongly condemned the OIC for raising Kashmir at the Council. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta declared that Jammu and Kashmir was an integral part of India, adding that India’s decision to revoke Article 370 was illegal under international law.
Tripura chief minister wins second term
Manik Saha has had an illustrious political career, rising from joining the BJP in 2016 to become Tripura’s chief minister last year. At 69 years, this dental surgeon-turned-politician appears set for another term in her home state of birders.
He easily defeated veteran Congress leader Ashish Kumar by 1,257 seats in Town Bardowali seat, despite detractors forecasting tough times for him. Exit polls indicate that the BJP-IPFT alliance is likely to remain in power in Tripura with 33 seats in the 60-member Assembly, according to exit polls.
Manik Saha’s parties – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its tribal ally Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) have won several seats across the state. Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath of BJP won from Mohanpur seat with 7,385 votes while IPFT’s Sukla Charan Noatia took Jolaibari by 375 votes.
According to the Election Commission, the BJP-IPFT-Left Front alliance has won 33 seats in the 60-member Assembly while Pradyot Kishore Debbarma’s Tipra Motha won 13 seats. These results mean that the BJP and its allies – CPM+, IPFT and Tipra Motha- will remain in control of Parliament for the foreseeable future.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi launches scathing attack
On Tuesday morning, thousands of Indians marched in support of key opposition Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi as he launched an unflinching attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government over high unemployment and rising food prices. Gandhi lashed out at the Bharatiya Janata Party-led central government for “putting India on sale”.
He also accused Modi of having connections with billionaire Gautam Adani. The business conglomerate is under fire from a US-based short seller who alleges fraud and stock manipulation at some of its subsidiaries.
Rahul Gandhi, Congress leader, likened the relationship between Adani and Modi to that of a British East India Company, saying his party would keep pressing questions about its business practices until the truth emerged
Tornadoes touch down in Texas
Tornadoes are powerful winds that can move rapidly across land. They possess immense destructive power, wreaking havoc on buildings and causing severe harm to lives, properties, and vehicles alike.
Texas is among the states most vulnerable to tornadoes and experiences two main severe weather seasons: spring and fall. This is because warm, moisture-rich air masses from the Gulf of Mexico move east into Texas during these times, while dry air from West Texas is pulled westward by wind-driven currents, creating storms that can become hazardous.
On Tuesday, several tornadoes touched down across North Texas. Additionally, these storms produced damaging winds and hail, including one which made its way into Grapevine.
